Our thoughts are with our collegues and friends in Australia

Submitted by Brenda Walton, Communications

If you, like the Wild Rose Board, have been wondering about our collegues and friends in Australia, here's how you can help.  Consider participating in the recovery, planning and mitigation processes that communities in Victoria will need. How?

Anne Pattillo, President IAP2 Australasia, has contacted local councils in Victoria, the relevant state agencies, the Victorian Premier and the Australian Prime Minster with an offer of support.  The text of the letter is loaded on the IAP2 website (www.iap2.org.au). If you want to volunteer to help to the communities and agencies of Victoria in their time of need, drop Anne a line at pres@iap2.org.au .  Tell her what it is in terms of skills or approaches you could offer and give her your contact details (email and telephone).  Talk to your friends, colleagues about offering support.

President's Message

Submitted by Deborah Eastlick, President

Thank you Wild Roses! This is my final opportunity to fill this space as my term as WR President will close at next month’s Annual General Meeting. We have come a long way together over the past four years and I want to thank you sincerely for the opportunity, the provocative conversations, the friendships, and all the things you’ve taught me. It has been a rare privilege.

I will keep this brief in the hopes that you will be joining us for the AGM and our very interesting luncheon panel on Thinking Outside the Open House Box (see below for more details).

There are three other event invitations that I wish to personally extend to each and every one of you.

  • On March 3 we will hosting another WR Café on the topic of Aboriginal Engagement. See the details on the WR website http://www.iap2wildrosechapter.org/news_and_events
  • On April 23, IAP2 is hosting a member Leadership Program in Vancouver, BC in conjunction with the April IAP2 Board meeting. Register at www.iap2.org
  • And finally, the 17th IAP2 International Conference is being held in San Diego, CA from September 21-23, 2009. The calls for pre-conference training and conference presentations are already out. So if you are building a business case to join us in San Diego, consider presenting – registration is open! I am one of the conference program chairs, so if you have questions, ideas, or P2 videos/films (we’re having a film festival!), please call or send me an email. Watch both websites for conference details as they become available. The program will be posted May 1.

Wild Rose Webinar Series - What you missed

Submitted by Blair McNaughton, Technology

We have worked our way through the second in our series of lunchtime webinar sessions and I’m happy to say things are running along smoothly. In our second webinar, IAP2's Executive Director Moira Deslandes, introduced participants to Future Perfect Thinking. Using her experience guiding IAP2 members at the 2008 Glasgow conference through a strategic planning exercise, Moira explored the power of future perfect story as a strategic planning tool.

Fourteen participants joined into this 45 minute primer on Future Perfect Thinking. But for those of you who didn’t get to participate, a recording of the webinar is available at http://www.youtube.com/user/iap2wildrose (five parts) and a copy of the PowerPoint can be downloaded at http://www.iap2wildrosechapter.org/webinar_presentation.

The lunchtime webinar series was started as a way to bring a variety of professional development topics to Wild Rose members in a convenient and easy to access manner. It’s particularly exciting that both of our first two webinar hosts presented from Australia, underlining the potential this tool has to connect Wild Rose members with P2 practitioners and experts from around the world.

Technology-wise, we have managed to iron out most the glitches, so the sound and other factors that impeded the quality of the first webinar were significantly better this time around. A few participants have encountered difficulty accessing the webinar because of corporate security blocking access to Citrix online (webinar software). While this may continue to be a problem for a few members, the vast majority, including most those accessing from corporate locations, have little or no difficulty accessing the webinar sessions.

As we move forward with the webinar series, I look forward to exploring different strategies and tools to increase participant interaction, including a future panel session. For now, watch for details on our next lunchtime webinar, a case study of P2 tracking software in action, presented by Colin Ellis of SustaiNet.

Annual General Meeting - Save the Date

Submitted by Paula Kupchak Hall, Director

Join us at Fort Calgary on March 20 for the IAP2 Wild Rose Annual General Meeting.

This year’s event promises an insightful and lively discussion that will get you “Thinking Outside the Open House Box”.

A panel comprised of representatives from the Calgary Board of Education, the City of Edmonton and AltaLink will discuss their recent approaches to effective and meaningful consultation in a time when stakeholders are saturated with consultation.

The event will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Registration and detailed agenda to follow.  See you there!

Youth Director Trainee Position

Submitted by Jan Bloomfield, Vice President

The Wild Rose Board is excited to announce the creation of a Youth Director Trainee position, which will provide opportunities for individuals aged 30 years or less who are interested in pursuing, or are just starting out in, a P2 related job or career, to participate in a non-voting capacity on the Board.

We anticipate that up to 2 individuals at any one time will be able to participate in this program, with one generally representing Southern Alberta and the other generally representing Northern Alberta. Terms for the 2 positions will be staggered, with one being initiated in 2009 and the other in 2010.

We are very pleased to welcome Quinn Eastlick as our first Youth Director Trainee, effective January 2009. It is due to the interest and enthusiasm expressed by Quinn over the past few months that the Board identified the benefits of establishing the positions.

IAP2 Presidential Message

Submitted by Dr. Geoff Fagan, IAP2 President 2009

As an Association we are only as strong as those individuals and groups who gather to advance the mission of IAP2 and our common vision to advance the practice of public participation.  My own hopes for IAP2 membership is that we grow to attract greater diversity in our membership, remain relevant to the challenges of our time and build partnerships that foster collaboration in all that we do.  I would like to extend the challenge to all members to recruit others, get involved in your Association and stay in touch by referring to our website, building dialogue through our blog and participating in our Conference in San Diego in 2009.  I hope to meet many of our members there in September.

One of the initiatives that the Board is undertaking this year is to have every Board member contact 50 members and listen directly to them about their issues, ideas, hopes and expectations for their Association.  If you get a call, don’t hold back! Let us know your thoughts.

VANCOUVER B.C.,CANADA - 23 APRIL 2009

IAP2 Members, Affiliate and Chapter representatives and members eager to have leadership opportunities are encouraged to attend this exciting professional development opportunity. The IAP2 leadership workshop will coincide with a meeting of the IAP2 International Board, 24th – 26th April, AND the BC Chapter Symposium on the 24th April. Attendees are encouraged to stay on for the 24th and the morning of the 25th to participate in these two other events.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE GATHERING?
To bring together Affiliate, Chapter and emerging IAP2 leaders with International Board members to:

  • exchange information between the Board, Affiliate, Chapters, and members
  • develop skills to foster our membership support structures
  • translate IAP2’s strategic goals and objectives into local action
  • foster a sense of community among representatives of our Affiliate, Chapters, and members.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
We are seeking a strong mix of representatives from Chapters and the Affiliate, people trying to create or rebuild Chapters, and individual members especially from North America. Several International Board members will join us, and special guests will be invited to lead some of the sessions.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT?
You will be invigorated and challenged and you will have many opportunities to build your leadership skills and capabilities – all of which will be valuable to you in your role as an IAP2 leader and in your everyday professional responsibilities.

WHAT ARE THE COSTS?
Thanks to our primary sponsor, TransLink (Canada), there is no registration fee for the workshop and participants will have free local public transportation. Affiliates and Chapters are encouraged to consider this a high priority and seek local funds to pay for representatives’ travel and lodging. The IAP2 Membership Committee is also working to secure additional sponsors, and may be able to provide a limited amount of scholarship support especially for participants from outside North America.
