Webinar Series Wraps Up

Submitted by Blair McNaughton, Vice President

April 30th marked Wild Rose’s final lunchtime webinar of the season. Seventeen participants joined Collin Ellis (SustaiNet) and Emma Shea (Communica) as they presented Bridging the gap: ‘from Spreadsheet to Database – the next step.  Throughout the presentation Colin took a theoretical perspective, examining the different stakeholder tracking options and why P2 practitioners may want to consider Stakeholder Relationship Management (SRM) software. Emma complimented the theory with a case study of her own experience using SRM software on a Canadian energy project.

Participant evaluations were overwhelming positive and there was definitely some interest in moving beyond the general overview approach of this particular presentation. If you would like to download a copy of the presentation, it is available at http://www.iap2wildrosechapter.org/current_initiatives/webinar_30april . A video of the presentation will also be available soon on Youtube at http://www.youtube.com/user/iap2wildrose .

It seems that we have overcome most of the technical difficulties encountered in the first webinars and Colin and Emma were able to utilize some of the more interactive tools, such as polling, that the webinar software offers. There are no further Wild Rose webinars schedules this season, but watch for a request for presenters for future webinars as we plan for a new webinar series to start in the fall. Watch also for information regarding IAP2 International sponsored webinars.

    Location:    The Billiard Club, 2nd Floor, 10505 Whyte Ave, Edmonton
    Time:           6pm - 8pm

    AGM Survey Now Online

    Submitted by Paula Kupchak Hall, Communications Director

    This year’s AGM was the most well-attended in the Wild Rose Chapter's history.  About 50 people came to take part in the insightful and lively discussion about “Thinking Outside the Open House Box”.

    A panel comprised of representatives from the Calgary Board of Education, the City of Edmonton and AltaLink discussed their recent approaches to effective and meaningful consultation in a time when stakeholders are saturated with consultation.

    If you were at the event, we're interested in your feedback.  Please take a moment to fill in our survey at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=lhVwihtC0BanasGX40l97w_3d_3d>http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=lhVwihtC0BanasGX40l97w_3d_3d

    Public Engagement Principles Update

    Submitted by Paula Kupchak Hall, Communications Director, in conjunction with Stephani Roy McCallum, IAP2 Past President

    In late 2008, Stephani Roy McCallum entered into discussion with Sandy Heierbacher of the National Coalition of Dialogue & Deliberation in the U.S. in order to identify ways we could work together on joint initiatives, and possible approaches to engage the new Obama Administration on improved public engagement activities.

    Since that time, NCDD, IAP2 and the Co-Intelligence Institute have been leading a dynamic, collaborative online process aimed at developing a set of Core Principles for Public Engagement that most people and organizations in this field can support.  Dozens of practitioners and leading organizations have contributed to the creation of the Core Principles.

    The group briefed the Obama Administration at a meeting in early March about this initiative, and they are now about to officially submit the FINAL Core Principles document to the people working on Obama's open government directive.

    The Core Principles, as well as the growing list of organizational and individual endorsers can be found at http://www.thataway.org/files/Core_Principles_of_Public_Engagement.pdf

    If you have any questions or comments about this initiative, please contact Stephani directly at stephani@dialoguepartners.ca

    Reminder>>Call for Training Committee Volunteers

    Submitted by Brenda Walton, Training Director

    This year the Board has decided to issue Request’s for Expressions of Interest (REOI) for both the delivery of IAP2 Certificate Training and the delivery of Public Participation Professional Development Training in the fall of 2009. As a result there is a need to support the Training Director in the timely review and selection of a slate of trainers and this work could be more efficiently completed through a committee. At the April Board Meeting, a motion was passed to establish a Training Committee.

    Committee Scope:
    The Training Committee will act in an advisory capacity to the Board, providing oversight and guidance for Wild Rose Training Programs.  Specifically, the Training Committee will:
    ·      Utilize the REOI selection criteria, to evaluate and select a slate of trainers for both IAP2 Certificate Training and Professional Development Training;
    ·      Work with the Training Director and Communications Director in the delivery of special events (i.e. Wild Rose Café, etc.)
    ·      Develop training policies as required for recommendation to the Board;
    ·      Identify and maximize opportunities for organizational growth as it relates to training; and
    ·      Resolve issues, disputes or other conflict that may develop with regard to trainers and/or the training program.

    Committee Composition:
    The Committee’s composition will be reviewed by the Board annually to ensure alignment with the organization. Volunteers Committee Members will be sought from current WR members only. The Committee will consist of four members and the Chair, who geographically represent the members of IAP2 Wild Rose Association. The WR Training Director will serve as Chair of the Committee. Committee members will serve for a 12 month term.
    Deadline:

    Volunteers have until May 15, 2009 to declare their interest in writing to the Training Director – Brenda Walton at brenda@kairoscreativesolutions.com
