Submitted by Brenda Walton, Webmaster
The Wild Rose Chapter is proud to announce the launch of its Member's Only Site. Access to this site is linked directly to our monthly membership reports so you must have an active membership in order to access this site. If you would like to become a member, go to http://www.iap2.org/registernewmembers.cfm.
If you are already an active member, you will need to create your own unique password by going to http://www.iap2wildrosechapter.org/password. You will be prompted for your username, which is your email address, then you can click the submit button. You will then see text indicating that A link to reset your password was sent to your email. You will then need to go to your inbox, where you will find an email with the subject line Password Reset Request (please note this link will only be valid for 30 minutes). Read and follow the instructions in the email to open a new page with fields for you to create your password. Save that password. Once you have created your password, you will be able to log onto the Member's Only Site using your email address as your username, and the unique password you just created. The above link will also work if you have forgotten your password and need to reset it.
Once in the Member's Only Site, you will find a number of pages, including:

- NEW Job Postings, with a form for members to submit job postings

Case Studies to be added to Member's Only Site
Submitted by Brenda Walton, Webmaster
The Wild Rose Chapter would like to enhance our Member's Only Site by providing a variety of Case Studies for our member's learning. And you can help us to do that. We have developed a template for Case Study Submissions. The template is intended to walk you through the steps involved in developing a thorough case study. In 300-500 words, you will describe your project including:
- Decision statement
- Key Stakeholders
- Identification of 3 – 4 key issues
- Identification of how IAP2 Core Values are embedded
- A brief outline of the decision process and identification the decision maker
- What happened on the project and who was involved
- Any relevant information that will be necessary for those using this case study to plan for a public participation process
We encourage you to provide as much detail about the actual situation as necessary to paint a picture of the scenario. Include pictures and diagrams to enable someone to better understand the situation. When developing the case study, the following principles should be kept in mind.
- The scenario or “story” is seen as relevant by IAP2 members to their profession, their culture, etc.
- The scenario is relatively simple, but believable and contains a “richness” of issues.
- The background is easily grasped and understood quickly.
- The story is one that triggers elements of an emotional reaction (i.e. both value and data based).
- Has a successful outcome on at least one key aspect of P2
Your completed submission can be sent to brenda@kairoscreativesolutions.com

Submitted by Blair McNaughton, Technology
Wild Rose IAP2 invites you to the inaugural event of our new lunchtime webinar series:
Date: Thursday December 11, 2008
Time: 12:15-1:00 pm
Wild Rose Members are invited to participate in the inaugural session of our new Wild Rose Webinar series. This interactive session, lead by Dr. Crispin Butteriss and Matthew Crozier, Co-founders of Bang the Table, will highlight an Australia based, web tool for engaging communities in collaborative learning, discussion, and debate. The Bang the Table site provides a portal for community access to project related FAQ’s, documents (including multimedia), event listings, survey, discussions, and reporting capabilities. Bang the Table has been used by both corporate and public based P2.
Our Wild Rose Lunchtime Webinar Series is an exciting opportunity to highlight tool, techniques, and other up and coming topics of interest to P2 practitioners across Alberta. The series will be a unique opportunity to explore these topics from the comfort and convenience of your own office or home. Each webinar will combine a conference call and web component, and will last about 45 minutes. Webinars will be accessible from any internet connection, although a high-speed connection will be preferable. Webinars do not require any software to be installed.
To register for the Bang the Table Webinar email your interest to Blair McNaughton at bmcnaughton@maze.ab.ca . A confirmation reply will follow shortly after your registration with connection details closer to the date.

Wild Rose Café set for November 25, 2008
Submitted by Ruth Klinkhammer, Training
Mark your calendars for an exciting evening of food, wine and engrossing conversation. Our Chapter’s first Wild Rose Cafe has been set for 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 25 at the Unicorn Pub in downtown Calgary.
The event will follow the format of the highly popular Science Cafes which, in just 10 years, have spread from their birthplace in Leeds to locations such as Kenya, Iran, Australia and Brazil. Science cafes offer citizens the opportunity to discuss issues surrounding science and new technologies with experts. Science topics range from genetics to biofuels to nanotechnology.
The Wild Rose Cafe will deal with issues of interest to those engaged in the practice of public consultation and community engagement. Two experts will present different perspectives on one topic. A moderator will then open the floor for questions and discussion. Food and drink can be purchased off the menu.
The Wild Rose Cafe will be an evening where accepted thoughts and practices can be explored and questioned. It is anticipated that participants will leave the cafe with new insights into the practice of public participation. The topic and speakers for the first cafe are still being finalized, so please stay tuned – the focus for this exciting new event will be announced soon.
The Tradition of the Wild Rose Question Quilt
Submitted by Adelle Palmer, Secretary
Wild Rose members may or may not be aware of a prominent part of tradition at the International Conferences – the Wild Rose Question Quilt. From its conception as an embryo in 1983, to the reality of the construction of the quilt for the 1995 Whistler Conference, the Wild Rose Question Quilt has traveled far and wide collecting questions that cross continents, cultures and traditions.
At International Conferences, submissions are made for the Question Quilt that reflect the conference theme or new developments in public participation. Members answering the questions posed on the quilt produce individualized Guiding Principles that reflect the culture, traditions and values of their local chapters. The questions also allow international members to overcome the urge to have global principles that must apply to all.
At the Wild Rose Symposium in May the quilt was on display for all to view and it’s history discussed. The quilt then made the journey across the Atlantic to the International Conference in Glasgow, Scotland where an additional question was formulated by Mary Moreland, a long time IAP2 member from Ottawa. It reads, “How can we learn public participation best practices from other cultures and apply them to our own?"
A photo of the quilt when it was first displayed in Whistler in 1995 is below. Left to right - Stuart Adams, Barb Boyde (past President), John Shires. The guy on the stilts helped them to hang the quilt as there was no ladder available. Check out the History of the Question Quilt or the Question Quilt meets Whistler ‘95 on our website.
